- Some things you have to know in order to understand and conjugate adjectives:
1) There are two types of adjectives in Japanese, i adjective and na adjectives.
2) i adjectives' conjugation pattern is new to us
3) Some adjectives end in "i" but are NOT i adjectives.
For example: きれい (pretty/clean)、ていねい (polite)、ゆうめい (famous) - are all "na" adjectives so be careful!
3) Na adjective conjugate just like nouns
Click yes to contine- YES!
- Also, adjectives can be used in two different ways:
1) To modify or describe nouns where the adjective comes in front of the noun....
やすいカメラです。 (A cheap camera)
2. As the "B" part of an "A wa B desu" sentence:
このかめらはやすいです。 (This camera is cheap)
3) When an i adjective goes in front of a noun, NOTHING has to be added - simply add the adj to the noun
e.g. おいしい すし です (delicious sushi)
4) HOWEVER, when a na adjectve goes in front of a noun, a NA HAS to be added..
E.g. べんり な ペンです (A handy/convenient pen)
Don't forget to add the na!
Click "yes" to continue...- YES!
- This is how you conjugate "i" adjectives:
Rule: Drop the i and add the following endings: ~くない(not) ~かった(was) ~くなかった(was not)
So the rule should be memorized as: いーくないーかったーくなかった (or いーかったーくないーくなかった)
Let's try one: Interesting
おもしろい - it is interesting
おもしろくない - it is not interesting
おもしろかった - it was interesting
おもしろくなかった - it was not interesting
Those endings above are all "plain form". To make them formal, you just add です
おもしろいです
おもしろくないです (OR おもしろくありません)
おもしろかったです
おもしろくなかったです (OR おもしろくありませんでした)
Click "yes" to continue....- YES!
- Conjugate "na" adjectives just like nouns
Just add です(is) - じゃありません (is not) - でした (was) - じゃありませんでした (was not)
Let's try this one: Pretty (NOTE: a "na" adective!!!!)
きれいです (plain form here is either きれい or きれいだ)
きれいじゃありません (plain form is きれいじゃない - then you can add です to this to make it formal again)
きれいでした (plain form = だった)
きれいじゃありませんでした (plain form = じゃなかった then add です to make it formal again)
Click "YES" to continue....- YES!
- Summary and tips:
1) i adjectives - いーくないーかったーくなかった
2) Na adjectives = ですーじゃありませんーでしたーじゃありませんでした
OR ですー じゃない -でした - じゃなかった
Click "YES" to continue....- YES!
