JPN 1500 L.9 Oral Part A
*Task: You go to your sensei’s office to tell her about your friend’s absence. After you relay the message, chat with sensei using honorific speech.
*This dialogue will be performed by you and the instructor (one on one).
Situation: Your Japanese classmate calls you and tells you s/he is not feeling well. S/he:
In the dialogue you want to make use of the following patterns:
Example dialogue:
You: (knock)
Sensei: はい、どうぞ
You: (Entering her office) こんにちは、しつれいします
Sensei: あっ、~~さん、こんにちは。どうしたんですか。
You: あのう、きょうのクラスのことなんですけど。。。
Sensei: はい
You: じつは、~~さんから電話があって。。
Sensei: はい
You: (Symptom 1 + Symptom 2) + と言っていました。
Sensei: あ、そうですか。
You: はい、それで (She said she’s going to skip class/not be in class today)
Sensei: そうですか。
You: はい、それから、(what is Monday’s homework?- politely)
Sensei: (Gives homework)
You: (Repeats homework)ですね。
Sensei: ええ
You: ありがとうございました、じゃ、しつれいします。
Sensei: じゃ、また。~~さんにおだいじにとつたえてくださいね。
You: はい、しつれいします。
Part B: Using keigo w/sensei: You have to interview your teacher for a Japan Club newsletter. Come up with 4 interesting questions using 4 different keigo verbs!

- Tells you her symptoms (and relay them to the teacher)
- Asks you to tell the teacher that s/he will be skipping class today
- Asks you to find out what the homework is…
- Asks you to find out if the sensei will be coming to lab on (Tues)
In the dialogue you want to make use of the following patterns:
- Describing your friend’s symptoms: Adding adj. together.. (this will be given to you on a card)
- Reporting speech: ~と言っていました
- Using “という” to describe unknown things…
- Use of んです to explain things to the teacher
- Using keigo to ask the sensei questions and chat a bit… (Ask sensei if she’s seen a recent movie or if she’s eaten at a particular restaurant etc.)
Example dialogue:
