A. Formulaic Expressions
1. Opening Expression
Hajimemashite (It's the first time)
2. Closing Expression (Please treat me well)
Yoroshiku (casual: higher to lower or equal-equal)
Douzo yoroshiku (casual: higher to lower or equal-equal)
Yoroshiku onegaishimasu (polite)
Douzo yoroshiku onegaishimasu (polite+)
Douzo yoroshiku onegai itashimasu (polite++: to teacher, doctor, etc.)
3. Other formulaic expressions
Kochira koso douzo yoroshiku onegaishimausu (It is I who should ask you to be nice to me)
Doumo (no explicit meaning, has a sense of "thank you")
4. Greetings (aisatsu)
1. Good morning (bow)
a. ohayoogozaimasu (おはようございます) – polite. To be used for the teacher, strangers, higher status people.
b. ohayoo (おはよう)-- informal. To be used with classmates or friends.
2. Good afternoon (bow)
a. konnichiwa (こんにちは) -- neutral. To be used with everyone.
3. Good evening (bow)
a. konbanwa(こんばんは)-- neutral. To be used with everyone.
5. Other useful expressions
1. Thank you
a. (doomo) arigatoo gozaimasu/gozaimashita -- polite for teacher, higher status.
b. arigatoo -- casual for friends, classmates, equals
c. doomo -- mainly casual but also used as a polite acknowledgement of a greeting etc.
2. You’re welcome
a. doo itashimashite (rarely used) -- ie ie or iie is more common
3. Excuse me
a. sumimasen

a. sumimasen ga, shitsumon ga arimasu.
2. Sensei, please repeat that.
b. sensei, moo ichido onegaishimasu or moo ichido itte kudasai (please say..)
3. What is “~~”
a. (specify word) wa nan desu ka. (What is….?)
b. (specify word) wa nihongo de nan desu ka. (What is….. in Japanese?)
c. (specify word) wa eigo de nan desu ka. (What is….. in English?)
4. Leave taking expression.
a. shitsureishimasu.

a. chotto matte kudasai.

a. wakarimasu ka/wakarimashita ka.
