Te-form hot potato
JPN 1100 L.5 Te-Form
Quiz
- In order to create the te form, you have to know that there are 3 types of verbs in Japanese.
1. う verbs = all these verbs end in う、つ、る、む、ぶ、ぬ、く、ぐ and す (basically the う row of the hiragana chart)
2. いる・える verbs = all these verbs (obviously) end in iru or eru
3. Irregular verbs = There are only two: する and くる
Choose "yes" and continue to the next part of the explanation...- yes
- no
- Now, the te-form of う verbs is the most difficult simply because there are so many endings.
This is why you'll want to memorize this song...
This is for う Verbs only! (Sung to the tune of "Oh My Darling, Clementine")
う つ る ---- って
む ぶ ぬ ---- んで
く ---- いて
ぐ ---- いで
Some exceptions (する --- して, くる --- きて)
(OR you could use: いく --- いって、かえる --- かえって)
す --- して
So, like the song says, take off the plain form ending of the verb, then add the te form.
For example:
たつ ----- たって
かう ----- かって
はなす ------ はなして
およぐ ------ およいで
Got it?
Choose "yes" and go to the next section...- yes
- no
- For いる/える Verbs, all you have to do it take off the る and add て.
So......
たべる ---- たべて
おきる ------ おきて
ねる ----- ねて
You get the idea.
One thing to remember is that people often think that all verbs ending in る are いる・える verbs, but that is NOT the case.
For example: のる ends in "oru" and すわる ends in "aru" - not in いる・える so this means they are う verbs.
Also, a couple of verbs that end in いる・える are actually う verbs:
かえる (to return), きる (to cut) and はいる (to enter/go in)
Choose "yes" to go to the next part...- yes
- no
- The last set of verbs are the irregular ones.
Technically speaking, only する and くる are considered "pure" irregular verbs, but いく has an irregular て form (いって) and かえる、はいる and きる are tricky b/c they look like いる・える verbs but are う verbs.
So, the following just have to be memorized:
する ----- して
くる ----- きて
かえる ----- かえって (to return)
はいる ----- はいって
きる ----- きって (to cut)
Choose "yes" to go to the next section of this tutorial...- yes
- no
- One last pointer on spelling.
As I might have mentioned in class, the eternal question with the て form is "does it have a small つ or not"?
The answer is simple.
Only う verbs that end in う、つ、or る take a small つ! (and of course, いく because it is irreg. --- いって)
So.....
のる? ----- のって
かえる? ----- かえって
たべる? ----- たべて (no small つ b/c it is an いる・える verb!)
たつ? ----- たって
ならう? ----- ならって
Got the idea? Awesome.
Choose "yes" to go to the practice part of this tutorial....- yes
- no
- For this section, you must type in Japanese and follow these rules:
1. Do not use kanji
2. Do not include any spaces in your answer
3. Do not use any punctuation
Okay, from here on out, type out the te form of the verb given. Refer back to question #1,2,3 or 4 for help!
What is the て form of かく? - とる?
- よぶ?
- はなす?
- する?
- おきる?
- けす? (to turn off)
- およぐ?
- しめる? (to close)
- つかう?
- わかる?
- ねる?
- かう?
- たつ?
- いく?
- きく?
- つける? (to turn on)
- よむ?
Note that よむ and よぶ have the same て form. It is through context that you determine which word is meant... - いう? (to say)
The te form of いく and いう are also the same. Again, context will tell you which word is meant. - みる?
- くる
